Sirsasana for Beginners | How to Headstand in Iyengar Yoga

Salamba Sirsasana (aka headstand) is a remarkable yoga pose. In this video, I teach how to do Sirsasana for beginners. You’ll learn how to practice headstand in a safe and progressive manner.

The practice begins by targeting the tight thoracic spine, which so often holds people back in their Iyengar Yoga inversions. It explores several yoga asanas to help facilitate an upper back release and then move into both supported and independent variations of Sirsasana.

Inversions are a key component to the Iyengar Yoga practice. These powerful poses offer so much benefit - from mental focus to physical strength, and even an emotional boost, Iyengar inversions are incorporated into almost every Iyengar Yoga class.

All that said, inversions are understandably intimidating, which is why I’ve focused on how to learn headstand if you are a beginner. I sincerely hope this practice gives you the tools and confidence to befriend one of my all time favourite poses - Salamba Sirsasana 💜💚.
